Is root canal treatment painful?
It is done under local anaesthetic, so you feel no pain during it. The pain before treatment is usually far worse, since it comes from the inflamed nerve. Mild discomfort for a few days afterwards is normal.
When is an extraction necessary?
When the tooth cannot be saved — a severe fracture below the gum, very extensive decay, or loss of supporting bone. We always try to save the tooth first; extraction is the last option.
Do tooth-coloured fillings last as long as metal ones?
Modern tooth-coloured fillings are durable and appropriate in most cases, with the advantage of removing less healthy tissue than amalgam. Longevity depends on the size and position of the filling and your biting habits.
I feel sensitivity with cold drinks — what does that mean?
It could be gum recession, enamel wear, decay, a crack or an inflamed nerve. The causes are quite different and so are the treatments, which is why an examination is the first step.
